A few weeks ago while recording episodes 35 and 35 of Beyond the Rut, Brandon noticed that Jerry had been getting thinner. In fact, by that time Jerry had lost 16 pounds since the start of 2016.Here's the crazy thing. Jerry did not adopt any gimmicky diets. He didn't go Vegan. He ate whatever he wanted and simply changed the when and how he ate.Brandon and Jerry discuss how to lose weight without dieting in this episode.Giving Credit Where Credit is DueThe program discussed in this episode is nothing Jerry developed on his own. He was able to join a program called NaturallySlim through his work's wellness program for free! The 10-week program has since rocked his world challenging everything he ever thought about eating, dieting, and what was healthy or not. The epiphany for Jerry has been that the best way to lose weight has not been about what he eats as much as it has been about when and how he eats.Disclaimer: Seek the advice of your physician or dietitian before trying a program like this, especially if you have special dietary needs or medical conditions.Resources and LinksUse Your Smartphone to Lose Weight (Buy it on Kindle)11 Healthy Eating Habits of the Super Fit (Chalene Johnson)Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. We recently reached out to former NFL player Jason Brown. He's the player who gave up a multi-million dollar contract to take up farming for a cause. You can read the 2014 Business Insider article here. Read it while you listen to this episode though. The NFL farmer didn't grant us an interview. He gracefully told us know, and it was the best rejection letter we ever received. See for yourself.Hello Brandon! Thank you for reaching out to us! We appreciate your consideration for a podcast interview, however we are not accepting media requests at this time. We prefer to focus on our faith, family and farm. We wish you and your show all the best. Peace and blessings!Of course, now we want to interview him more than ever! Listen to this episode as we break down all the things Jason Brown did right in his response to us, and why we love it so much. Seriously, we loved his response so much that it's actually a lesson we are sharing with you!Sometimes the Answer is NoYou've probably heard motivational speakers and coaches tell you mantras like, "No is not an option!" and "If you want to succeed, you have to learn to get to the yes!"FACT: No is sometimes the right option as well. We all need skills at handling being told no, and discerning what that no is telling us.What do you do when the answer is no?When can you tell that being told no is a good thing?Remember that when you hear, no, you're not necessarily stuck at a dead end. It may be a sign that you need to beef up skills in a certain area of your life. It may mean that you need redirection. No does not mean you're at an endpoint on your path. There Are No Perfect ConditionsWhen it comes to telling ourselves no, remember that there are no perfect conditions. We cannot know ALL the information that is available. There may not be information available from our current position. It may not be feasible to wait until you have all the facts."Everything we know for certain is in the rut with us!"Resources and Links (Podcast Roll Style)We went name-drop crazy in this episode. There were successes and failures along the way. While we gave advice and encouragement, we also found ourselves faced with discouragement and needing advice ourselves. That's where we came across advice that helped us see things with a new perspective. Listen in on how feedback from our audience helped us make a major format shift at the start of 2016.It wasn't just listening to our current audience that helped us out in those first seven months. We became avid fans and students of podcasters like Jared Easley, Jody Maberry, and Jeff Goins studying how they shared their uniqueness, structured, their shows, and applied what we learned to Beyond the Rut.A funny thing began to happen. We started following our own advice. It started with looking within our own circles of influence for our first interviews, and we found them with Davidson Young of The Leaders Foundry Podcast and Sara McDaniel of the blog titled Simply Sara. We got out of our comfort zones with those first two interviews placing our faith and trust in the insights of others. We're podcasters not photographers! One thing is for certain. Beyond the Rut today is different than when we started. Whatever you start today may not be where you are in six months if you're making forward progress and considering the feedback you're getting from the field.Podcast Audience GrowthOur audience has been growing from dozens of unique downloads per month to hundreds! It's still far short of where we want to be, and it is also a victory in ways. Here are some things we learned about podcast audience growth: Appreciate the audience you have now. Engage your audience by asking for feedback. Focus on providing valuable content to your audience. Meet new people through your current circles. Our biggest leaps in our podcast audience growth have come through the connections we already had in our lives.Resources and LinksBtR 027 - Just Take Action and Other Insights from Jody MaberryBtR 031 - Benjamin Hardy on Happiness, Reality, and Writing for YourselfBtR 032 - Cynthia Tripathi on Sparking Positive Momentum and Escamping AverageSecrets of a Great Podcast with Jeff Brown - The Jody Maberry Show (on iTunes)Do Over: Rescue Monday, Reinvent Your Work, and Never Get Stuck by Jon Acuff (Buy it on Amazon)Podcasting Good to Great: How to Grow Your Audience Through Collaboration by Jared Easley (Buy it on Amazon)Fuzzy's Taco Shop Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Beating Self-DoubtWe bring Davidson Young back for another interview on the show where we ask him to tell us about the most common leadership rut his clients find themselves. While the host of The Leaders Foundry didn't share a common rut, he did identify the most common root cause. That common root cause of leadership ruts according to Davidson is self-doubt.It often sets in when a leader takes on a new role, a new department, or a new function.Self-doubt for a leader can lead to not communicating confidently and clearly with one's team. It could be the difference between taking decisive action towards success or stalling into failure. We don't have to be in a leadership role to be taken down by our own self-doubts. Have you ever stalled on a goal because you doubted whether you were qualified? How many years has that been now? See what I mean?Davidson shares tips on how to overcome self-doubt including speaking out the problem, role playing, and walking through the issue. You can and should overcome that self-doubt. This episode will share how.A Possible Return to Corporate Life?In episode 22 of Beyond the Rut, Davidson shared his story about what it took to leave corporate life to pursue his passion as a leadership consultant. Not only is Davidson a coach, he also receives coaching. That's brilliant! What if the thing Davidson needs to do is to return to corporate life? That is a possibility, and it's a decision that Davidson will have to consider in context of his goals, passions, family needs, and more. Listen to the episode to find out his thought process and he'll make his decision.Resources and LinksBtR 024 - Growth By Encouraging and Mentoring OthersBtR 028 - When Do You Know It's Time to Throw in the Towel?BtR 003 - Reading Towards Your Success, Why What Is On Your Bookshelf Influences Your Success Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Who is Bert De Vera?Just weeks after getting married to the love of his life, Bert De Vera immigrated to the United States from the Philippines to fulfill a contract to work for a physical therapy practice. He was reunited with her in just under two years. As his career gained traction, he found himself concerned about being stuck in a rut where his family's well-being hinged on his ability to work every day for a paycheck. What if something happened to him and he was no longer able to work? The solution?Running a Multi-City Physical Therapy Practice without a ClinicThirteen years later, Bert runs a successful physical therapy practice in multiple Texas cities with over 50 physical therapy professionals. The amazing part of his business includes the following: He doesn't have a single brick-and-mortar clinic location He doesn't have to fight a single insurance company for payment, and gets paid every time in full He doesn't have the typical HR concerns that a traditional health care practice hasIn short, the net income of his business model is maximized because he has found the right niche market, the right business model, and meets a need for patients, physicians, and physical therapy professionals.Taking Bert's Business to the Next Level - Teaching OthersBert shares with us plans to bring an online course, well, online teaching others to create the same low-overhead, high revenue business that he has successfully run for the past thirteen years.Stay tuned. We'll share the details to this online course as it comes online in the next few months.Resources and LinksEmail Bert: bertpt@gmail.comHow to Get Ready to Pursue Your Dream - BtR 009 Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Why do people run in a presidential election in the United States? How do we translate that to our own lives?2016 Presidential ElectionJeb Bush recently suspended his bid in the 2016 presidential election. He had the financial support, but could not garner the public support of his party to win the nomination for the Republican Party's ticket. He tried and failed. What can you learn from his experience?Jerry and Brandon tackle the question of why do people run for U.S. President putting themselves through months of the most brutal sales pitch in the country? While referencing examples like Jeb Bush, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, and even Bill Clinton, the Beyond the Rut team cover lessons that we can all apply to our own lives to make your own path and live the life you always dreamed of.Put yourself out thereGet out of your comfort zone, and be willing to failLearn from failure when it happensDo the work, don't expect to just show up without paying your duesMany who participate in a presidential election are already living a good life. They challenge themselves for one reason or another to get out of their comfort zones, take on living under a microscope and have every thing they say scrutinized. Also in this episodeThere is more money on the table than what people see. This simple tip is also discussed at the beginning of the episode to increase revenue to capture extra revenue, recurring revenue, and leverage the loyalty of your best customers.Your best customers will be your best marketing. You don't need a big rewards program to build loyalty, just consistently serve people.Resources and LinksBtR 029 - Emotional Intelligence and Building Emotional CapitalBtR 028 - When Do You Know It's Time to Throw in the Towel? Why Do People Run for President? Emotional IntelligenceEmotional Intelligence is the idea that we can be aware of our own emotions and attuned to the emotions of others. This includes the ability to build relationships and keep healthy relationships whether at home, school, or work. The better we can harness the power of relationships at work the more we can see doors open for us and pull ourselves out of a rut.Build Emotional CapitalSusan Scott, author and executive coach, talks about emotional intelligence as if we each have personal emotional bank accounts. Each person we encounter is either making a deposit or a withdrawal from our emotional bank account. The same is true for our impact on others. Every interaction we have is either making an emotional deposit in someone's life or making a debit from that account. In this episode, Jerry shares an instance where someone who is a taker in the workplace had a difficult time getting a project completed after months and months of toil. People avoided working with her. Information was rarely forthcoming. She often had to resort to power plays and calling on someone's authority. This is the result of many years of missing the mark on workplace relationships, give and take, compromise, and taking care of people. Someone who has built emotional capital with others was easily able to accomplish all the same tasks with just one email.Someone who makes a regular, genuine effort to care for other people in small ways as well as big ways, will see doors open, key connections made, and success come more easily. So, listen to this episode and find out how to build an emotional bank account with others. Your success depends on this ability.Resources and LinksBtR 015 The Magic Ratio for Happy, Healthy RelationshipsDownload this episode (right-click or press-and-hold)Resources from Talent Development Magazine Online, td.orgRocheMartin What Is Emotional CapitalNobel Prize Lecture by Daniel KahnemanConnect With UsSubscribe on iTunesSubscribe on StitcherEmail: info@beyondtherut.comCall: 361-596-3788, tell us what you’d like us to cover and how we can help you make your own path and live a life beyond the rut.Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. It's Time to Throw in the Towel, Jeb!We hear all kinds of messages and inspiration about never quitting, giving 110%, and many other cliches. The 2016 Presidential Primary Race has shown us that there is a time when it makes sense to just throw in the towel and call it quits.Maybe you have money and your reputation on the line. Things are not going the way you expected. It is possible you are at a point where you know if you continue on the course you are on now, you will absolutely fail. How do you let go of a dream you have pursued for years, especially if you have wanted it your entire life as far back as you can remember? When do you know it is time to throw in the towel or go in a different direction?Brandon and Jerry discuss three areas that will help us know when it is time to throw in the towel.PeopleMetricsA written planHaving the right people around you is crucial in recognizing when you have reached a point of no return. You will learn criteria on how to select a good adviser, listen to customers, and ask coworkers for feedback. We know where we are going because we measure the distance we have traveled. The metrics you collect will differ depending on what you are trying to accomplish. It is important to have measures that tell you how you are doing. For Jeb Bush, it was the polls and maybe his dwindling campaign fund. What are your metrics for your dream or goal? It's hard to know what to measure if you do not have an idea of where you want to be. A written plan is vital. Combining your written plan with your metrics and the feedback from others will help you understand whether you need to quit, adjust your plan, or change course altogether.Make it so giving feedback to you is quick and easy for others. When you are approached with feedback, welcome it and receive it.Resources and LinksMalcolm Gladwell TED Talk about Ragu sauceBtR 022 - Leaving Corporate Life to Pursue a Dream, Interview with Davidson Young of The Leaders Foundry PodcastConnect With UsSubscribe on iTunesSubscribe on StitcherEmail: info@beyondtherut.comCall: 361-596-3788, tell us what you'd like us to cover and how we can help you make your own path and live a life beyond the rut.Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself.
